Best for low emissions: Peugeot 208
“With low emission zones in the majority of UK cities to help improve air quality, there are some vehicles that are encouraged not to enter these zones. There’s a minimum emission standard that cars must meet before driving in these areas, for example, diesel cars must be at a Euro 6 level and petrol vehicles have to be a Euro 4 standard.
“As long as a diesel car was purchased new from the 1st September 2015 it is classed as Euro 6. For petrol cars that were bought new from the 1st January 2006 and onwards, they have a Euro 4 standard. The Peugeot 208 has the lowest emissions on the list, making it a great choice for inner-city commuters.”
Best for fuel efficiency: Audi A1
“As fuel efficient cars not only contribute to helping protect the environment, they’re also cheaper to run. The Volkswagen Polo, Audi A1 and Mini all have impressive fuel efficiency, so if you’re looking to keep running costs to a minimum, you may want to consider one of these cars.”
Best for road tax: Volkswagen Polo
“The Volkswagen Polo and Peugeot 208 both have low road tax costs, so if you’re searching for a vehicle to suit city commuting make sure you check the road tax costs beforehand. There are some vehicles that come with little to no road tax charge, but this is dependent on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle.”
Best for insurance cost: Hyundai i10
“Car insurance can contribute significantly to the overall cost of buying a car. If you’re looking to keep insurance costs low, then there are a number of things to consider. Choosing a vehicle that has lower emissions are often cheaper to run thanks to their smaller engine and may help to contribute to your insurance. The Hyundai i10 and VW Polo both have the lowest insurance costs but be mindful that insurance can be dependent on other factors than simply the car you drive.”
Best for length of the vehicle: Volkswagen Polo
“It’s no surprise that city centre living often comes with less space, so it’s important to look at the size and length of the car. If you’re looking for a vehicle where you don’t have to compromise on space, fuel efficiency or emissions then the Volkswagen Polo could be the perfect car for city living families.”
